GWR Raptor driver Lee Adams demolished the 1600cc Racing Car record at Prescott last weekend, taking it down to 37.53s, before going even quicker in the 2nd Run Off to record 37.39s.

To put this pace into perspective lets look back to 2001. The Outright Course Record in April 2001 stood to David Grace on 37.76s, set with a 3.5l Cosworth DFR V8 powered Gould. Whereas the 1600cc record at that time was a whole 2 seconds slower in the 39s !

The 1600cc class has seen a complete transformation in the last 10 years. In the late 90s and early 00s most cars had a spaceframe or aluminium monocoque, an automotive production based engine and a 4-speed H-pattern gearbox. Now the top cars, like Adam’s GWR RaptorĀ have a carbon-fibre tub, motorcycle-based engine, chain drive and a 6-speed sequential gearbox.

And who was it thatĀ held the 1600cc record in 2001? Graeme Wight Jnr…
