2012 SHC Awards – Surprise of the Year

To celebrate the end of speedhillclimb.com’s second full year of existence, we have decided to review the year and recognise some of the stunning performances we have seen on the hills over the 2012 season.

The prizes are purely for bragging rights in the 2013 paddock, but nevertheless over the last few days of the year we will be announcing the winners of the 2013 speedhillclimb.com Awards!

The 4th of our awards will be presented for the ‘Surprise of the Year’:

There have been several things which have caused a surprise during the year, at both National and Regional level.

Who would have thought that Jos Goodyear, having been slightly erratic in previous seasons, would develop onto such a consistent challenger at the very top end of the sport?

Alex Summers is rapidly becoming one of the fastest young drivers the sport has seen in years, but he surprised most observers in the Shelsley Walsh paddock back in May when, having suffered engine problems with his DJ’s Hayabusa motor on the dyno in the week prior to the event, he rummaged around in his Father’s workshop and rolled out the family F5000 Lola for a run at The World Famous venue. Gorgeous car, beautifully driven.

But the award, for springing a real surprise on the press corps, goes to Wallace Menzies and the DJ Racecars team for arriving at the August Shelsley National with a brand new, and reconfigured, DJ Firestorm chassis.

Nice one guys, I should have guessed when I saw it, but I just didn’t see it coming!

Check back tomorrow for award no.5.
