Another Gould for 2014

Possibly the biggest new car story of the winter so far has just broken! It is the news that there will be a third Gould GR59 hitting the hills during the 2014 season.

This will not be a customer car as we have seen with the 2-litre class runners for the Moyse family and for Paul Haimes, but a works development car being built for the Gould family.

The car will be a normally aspirated engined version of the full-length carbon chassis seen on the cars produced to date and will run in the 1600cc Racing Car class.

David and Sean Gould have acquired the Mistral tuned 1600cc Suzuki Hayabusa powerplant which was used in 2013 by Nicola Menzies and Dave Uren in their Force PC chassis. The ‘busa lump will be installed in the new car which will be even lighter than the 2-litre cars thanks to lighter corners and a few other tweaks.

The first 1600cc Gould car was the Gould-Terrapin in the late 70s (thanks to Steve Wilkinson).

Due to the intensive hours worked at Gould Engineering to meet the requirements of their customers in more illustrious forms of motorsport, to whom Gould supply carbon fibre components, there will be no championship chasing for this GR59. Sean Gould, along with selected co-drivers, will use the car as and when time allows.

Top-line hillclimb competition is nothing new to the Father and Son duo behind Gould Engineering. David built several hillclimb cars for himself during the 1970s and 1980s, culminating in the gorgeous F1 inspired Gould 84 wing-car which Chris Cramer used to claim the BHC title in 1985. Once Sean was old enough to compete, he also drove the Gould-Hart (which must haveĀ been a baptism of fire for an 18-year-old!).

The Gould 84 (seen here in 1985) was also 1600cc when it debuted in 1984 (thanks to Steve Wilkinson).

It will be fantastic to see yet another new car on the hills in 2014, and another works car at that… With OMS having run works cars for years and GWR, DJ & Gould all having factory cars underway, we only need Empire, Force and Pilbeam to get cars out and we could have a ‘Constructors Championship’ within the BHC!!
