BHC Gurston Preview

This coming weekend will see the British Hillclimb Championship revisit the fast, flowing, farmland venue at Gurston Down in Wiltshire. As ever, Gurston Press Officer Simon McBeath has sent us a brilliant event preview.

Trevor Willis will be on the limit as ever!

There’s a great weekend’s motor racing against the clock in prospect at Gurston Down Speed Hillclimb, Broad Chalke, near Salisbury on August 25th & 26th as a real quality entry featuring the country’s fastest cars and drivers take to the hill to contest rounds 27 and 28 of the 2012 Avon Tyres British Hillclimb Championship (BHC).

The main contenders in the TTC Group Hillclimb Leaders Championship are also present to ensure top action throughout all the classes.

And the first appearance at Gurston Down of the rumbling V8-powered ‘flathead Fords’ is not to be missed either! These amazing cars feature in the Hillclimb and Sprint Association’s championship classes and are sure to be a treat for the eyes and ears!

The 2012 British Hillclimb Championship has entered a very exciting phase with a new leader in Trevor Willis from Aylesbury currently topping the points table in his 3.2 OMS 25 Powertec. With current champion Ludlow-based Scott Moran and his father Roger (second in the 2011 championship) recently taking a two meeting break from the championship trail, Willis took maximum advantage by winning all four championship ‘Run Offs’ at Wiscombe Park in Devon and Craigantlet in Northern Ireland and setting new hill records at both to jump ahead of previous 2012 series leader Scott Moran in the standings.

With another two rounds to come at Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire, on August 19th the championship positions are unlikely to have significantly altered ahead of our meeting at Gurston. But one thing is certain – we are sure to see Moran and Willis at their very best as each seeks to achieve the maximum points tally. Could we even see the outright Gurston hill record under threat? Scott Moran has been close to it before, but the extra incentive of currently trailing Trevor Willis could spur him on even more. Willis by contrast has something of a power deficit compared to some of the other cars and this is a handicap on Gurston’s upper reaches, but his progress through the slower technical section is unrivalled… it’s going to be a great battle.

Another driver who could challenge for the Run Off wins is Tom New from Southampton, who runs in his 4.0 litre V8 powered Gould GR55. Tom won the second of the two Run Offs on this, his ‘home hill, when the BHCC visited Gurston in May and he also set ‘Best Time of the Day’ in the process, so he is sure to be in the mix!

The torque of Tom New’s Judd V8 could make it a contender.

Scotsman Wallace Menzies should feature strongly in the very rapid 3.2 DJ Firestorm. And how will the amazing 1.6 litre GWR Raptor fare at Gurston this time? In the hands of Jos Goodyear from Southam, currently an incredible third overall in the BHC having scored four outright wins and collected two hill records in the Channel Islands events, and Lee Adams from Peterhead who is sixth overall with three outright wins to his name, the Raptor struggled for points at Gurston in May. But will the team have found some technical gains to overcome the substantial power deficit that really does show at Gurston?

And there will be action aplenty among all the other classes of cars that will be entered; everything from road going to modified production cars, sports racing cars and single seater racing cars will be racing flat out against the clock.

Spectator access at Gurston is unrivalled; you simply can’t get closer to the action! Car parking and paddock entry are free, admission is very reasonable, and there’s everything you need on site for a great value, great fun day out including a restaurant and licensed bar.
