Our BHC season review continues today with a look at the season of the man who has been a regular ‘Number’ holder since the mid-nineties in Pilbeam, Dallara and Gould chassis, each fitted with his faithful ex. F1 4.0 litre Judd EV V8 engine.

10th – Deryk Young (57 points)

For many years Midlands Hillclimb specialist Deryk Young had nailed down ‘number 9′ in the BHC, his impressive performances at Shelsley, Loton and Prescott plus occasional trips to Gurston, Harewood and others often allowed him to out score his far-travelling rivals over the course of the season.

With the rise of the bike-engined cars beginning in 2011, Delboy dropped down the list to 19th overall, and then in 2012 incredibly he failed to score any points at all after suffering from some unfortunate mechanical maladies with the big Gould-Judd GR51B (the ex. Graeme Wight Jnr 2001/2002 BHC winning car).

Having solved many of the mechanical frailties over the winter Deryk and wife Sue who shares the car with him, were much happier wth their package for 2013. Deryk was straight into points-scoring positions at Prescott for Rounds 1 & 2 and maintained that rhythm right through to the end of the year, developing the car along the way by adding traction and launch control towards the season’s end.

The high point was definitely the podium finish, behind only Willis and Moran Jnr at Loton Park in June. The low point was probably being knocked out of a Run Off spot in qually at Prescott in September by Sue!!

With an abundance of blown bike-engined cars expected for 2014, the mods and improvements to the Gould-Judd may just have come at the right time, but it could be that Deryk and Sue will have to travel a little further afield if they are to secure a coveted ‘number’ for the 2015 season.
