Crutey’s Beauty!

Cornish 2-litre driver Paul Crute achieved a long-held ambition at Wiscombe Park last weekend when he set his 1st ever sub-40 second run.

Paul Crute and Van Diemen at Wiscombe National

Garage owner Crute has developed his ex. Formula Renault Van Diemen over the past few years and has always aimed for a coveted 39 at the Devon venue.

Replacing the circuit spec Renault gearbox with a sequential Hewland FTR, allowing easy ratio changes, and playing around with different front aero (even trying a Montoya/Williams F1 wing at one stage) has helped Paul to trim 1.5s or so from his PB.

Paul should have set his 39 at the Wiscombe National, but he broke a driveshaft on the Van Diemen in the morning and then ran wide at Sawbench after lunch which left him stuck on 40.28s.

Well done on the 39.72s run on Saturday Paul, and to Liz for winding you up to it!
