Eddie Expects Epic Empire!

We are pleased to reveal, after a couple of months of negotiation and planning, that two of the Westcountry’s most successful hillclimb exponents are joining forces for an attack on the 1600cc Racing Car class in 2014.

Empire Racing Cars

The recent expansion of Empire Racing Cars has been covered in-depth here on speedhillclimb.com, but as well as the continued production of carbon fibre Wraith chassis over the winter, Bill Chaplin will also be building a new model of car for South West hillclimber and former Leaders Hillclimb Champion Ed Hollier.

‘Kimi’ Hollier has dominated hillclimb events south of the M4 this season with the Pilbeam-Suzuki MP62 that he has developed with his Father Bob. The Gurston Down Top 10 Challenge Title and a whole host of FTDs during the year has left Ed wondering what to do next.

Hollier has had massive success with this Pilbeam-Suzuki  MP62 in 2013.

The answer is a specially commissioned Empire chassis in which to install his Mistral-tuned Suzuki Hayabusa engine. The chassis will be based on a similar chassis to the Empire 002 being used in the Leaders Series by Simon Fidoe, except the spaceframe will be braced with Nomex honeycomb, and will feature a shorter nose and revised aerodynamics.

New Empire will be similar to the Fidoe 002 chassis2

Hollier told us “I can’t wait, the Pilbeam is a fantastic car, but this chassis should be a good chunk lighter and have more downforce”.

Chaplin has already started work on the car which will be ready for the start of the 2014 season.

Ed’s giant-killing Pilbeam, the first MP62 to be seen with motorcycle power, is currently for sale if anyone is after a cracking car.
