Fingers Crossed for Barbon 2011 !

This Saturday sees 2011s only BHC visit to the picturesque Barbon Manor on the edge of the Lake District and I think that everyone involved (particularly the organisers) will be hoping for more luck than the venue has had in recent years.

2008 was the last time that the full event was run !

In 2009 torrential rain set in after morning practice which turned the track into a river and the paddock, which is always difficult to cope with for the single-seater drivers & crews, into a lake. There was talk of cancelling the event at lunchtime, but the sun came out later on in the afternoon and the Westmorland Motor Club produced miracles to allow a single Top 12 Run Off to be run.

Everybody was hoping for more in 2010, but most competitors ended up with significantly less… Nemesis 600 driver Rob Capper suffered an unfortunate incident after bottoming out on the top straight and dumped a sump full of oil on the track. A decision that was somewhat hasty, not for the first time (think Wiscombe 1998), was made to abandon the BHC rounds and to continue with the day as a club event and the ‘big-boys’ left to prepare for Harewood the following day.

Those who chose to continue running had a fantastic event, getting lots of runs, and some of the times put in certainly proved that the BHC runners should have continued….. Wallace Menzies got within 1sec of the Outright Course Record on his first visit to the hill, and lanky-northerner Allan Warburton took a new class record with hisĀ Caterham !
