Harewood Anniversary Weekend

The weekend just gone was a busy weekend on the club scene and featured three high-profile non-national events.

Harewood Hillclimb

A view of Harewood from the mid-70s (thanks to Steve Wilkinson)

As previewed on Saturday, Harewood Hillclimb near Harrogate celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a pair of one-day meetings which featured both ‘Birthday’ Celebrations and the final rounds of the hotly contested Harewood Hillclimb Championship.

Many cars & drivers from Harewood’s past & present were at the event both competing and taking part in demo runs, including 1963 & 1964 British Hillclimb Champion Peter Westbury who was reunited with both of his title-winning cars.

Midland Championship contender Morgan Jenkins loves Harewood and, sharing his Pilbeam MP87 with wife Amy (who was returning to competition for the first time since the birth of son Sam), and stormed to FTD on the Saturday. The OMS’s of Steve Owen & John Chacksfield were second & third overall.

Unfortunately on the Sunday the bad weather which affected most of the country hit Harewood as well, with the rain arriving mid-way through the first competition runs and causing some topsy-turvy results.

Visiting Jerseyman Len Amy took full advantage of a well-timed first run to take FTD with his rear-engined Mallock Mk32, ahead of Lynne Owen and Graham Smith.

In a great weekend for lady drivers the returning Amy Tomlin took the 2-litre Racing Car win and Sarah Bosworth backed up her overall win in the 2009 Gurston Down Hillclimb Championship with the 2012 Harewood equivalent.

It sounds like it was a great weekend, wish we could have been there…
