Hillam Claims Title

The final major speed hillclimb championship of 2012 was decided at the Curborough Sprint course in Staffordshire last Saturday as a four-way battle for the Hillclimb and Sprint Association Speed Championship was resolved.

The HSA series has a massive 29 counting rounds comprising 16 sprints and 13 hillclimbs with 9 events counting towards championship positions.

Matt Hillam has proved to be devastatingly fast on the sprints for several years now with the highly developed SBD Westfield Duratec, but he is also pretty damn quick on the hills as well, as he has proved this year with high scores at Gurston Down and at The World Famous Shelsley Walsh.

The title was secured for Matt and the SBD team after a final round battle with Ginetta G15 driver Mark Paterson and a last round charge through the order to second overall by multiple former champ John Palmer and his Westfield Puma. Paterson had the consolation of claiming the 2012 Ginetta Club Championship.

We understand that the all-conquering SBD Westfield has been sold (any gossip on who’s bought it anybody!?) and a new car is in build for 2013. Steve Broughton and his SBD team have a proven record with demon LoCaterFields, so it will be fascinating to see what comes next!
