History Made at Harewood

British Hillclimb history was made over the weekend at Harewood Hillclimb as Scott Moran became the sole holder of the record number of BHC Top 12 Run Off victories.

Scott Moran Gould GR61X

As we have reported over the past few weeks, Scott has been edging closer to beating Martin Groves’ record of 104 wins. He reached the magic 100 mark at Gurston in late May, before equalling Martin’s record at Loton Park in mid June. Scott missed out at Doune as defending champion Trevor Willis claimed both wins, but he was straight back to winning ways in the opening Run Off at Harewood and now has the record to himself.

The Ludlow driver did it in style as well, as top qualifying and hence last runner in the Run Off, Scott had to watch as fierce rival Willis stopped the clocks on 49.07s to set a new outright hill record. As we have seen so often in recent years though, Scott dug deep and charged his Gould GR61X up the twisting ribbon of Yorkshire tarmac to pip Willis’ three minute old record by 5/100ths of a second.

Scott returned to the paddock to a great reception from his family, friends and fellow competitors. His wife Deb unveiled a brilliant zipp.co.uk produced banner celebrating this historic record.

After things had calmed down a little, the triple champ said “When I started hillclimbing I never dreamt that I would claim this record. I won my first event here at Harewood back in 2003 so it is pretty special to take the record here as well.”

Many congratulations to Scott, Deb, Ollie and all at Team Moran for this mega achievement.

It could not have happened to a nicer guy. It is a record which may stand for a very long time.
