Film Night 22

The weeks Film Night looks across the Atlantic Ocean to the ‘good old boys’ of the North American Stock Car Auto Racing series, usually known as NASCAR.

NASCAR runs a very complicated Run Off system to decide who wins the top-line Sprint Cup championship. Last weekend the Federated Auto Parts 400 race at Richmond, Virginia saw the qualifying proceedure completed and the 16 drivers who enter ‘the Chase for Cup’ decided. Therefore this week ‘The Chase’ begins, and it begins at the 1.5 mile D-Shaped oval of Chicagoland Speedway, near Jolliet (any Blues Brothers fans out there!?) in Illinois.

To celebrate the start of The Chase, we thought that we would have a look back atr the life of one of NASCARs greatest ever Champions, a man who is still the crowds hero at any race weekend, the legendary ‘Intimidator’ Dale Earnhardt.

The seven-time Cup Champion was sadly killed following a multi-car shunt on the final lap of the blue riband Daytona 500 in 2001, but his legend lives on and he is still one of the biggest names oin the sport.

This ESPN film from the early-noughties is a tribute to the man and features testimonials and memories from competitors, teammates and journalists. An in depth, frank and at time very funny celebration of the life of one of the biggest stars in American sport.
