Spectacular Shelsley Scheduled

This weekend is The Big One at Shelsley Walsh in Worcestershire.

Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb

A huge entry of cars are scheduled to appear at The World Famous venue as the British, Leaders, Midland and Paul Matty Championships are joined by a mouth-watering selection of historic cars. The Lotus marque is the theme for this weekend and there will be a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Lotus Elan during the weekend.

The huge entry could well prove to be a problem for a couple of the front-runners in the BHC. Lee Adams (currently 6th overall) and Richard Spedding (currently 10th overall) have only been granted ‘reserve’ entry’s and as such might not be able to compete.

After a fairly thin line up of competitors in Northern Ireland for the last BHC round, all of the big-hitters have come out to play at the most famous hill of them all.

Scott & Roger Moran return to competition after their mid-season break and will be looking to prove the big Gould’s prowess at Shelsley. The grunt from the Nicholson McLaren V8 will be a strong benefit as the high-speed performance of Scott’s rival Trevor Willis’ OMS 25 has been greatly improved of late.

Recent events have seen the GWR Raptor shine, but if it is at a disadvantage anywhere then it is Shelsley. If the weather is good then Jos Goodyear & Lee Adams will struggle to repeat the cars recent results, but expect Adam’s class record to be destroyed along the way! Can Jos or Lee go flat ’til Bottom S?

The big class will see the return of an old favourite for the Shelsley crowd. Rob Turnbull has been competing in the top 10 since the mid-70s, when he drove a Brabham-BDA. These days Rob runs a Gould-Cosworth HB, but has been notable by his absence so far this season. The mightily powerful car (which is for sale incidentally) is always a spectacular sight at the hill and it will be great to see Rob back.

The scrap at the front of the field will be spectacular, but the one for the last spots in the Run Offs will be much the same. by my reckoning there are 21 drivers who are in with a big shout of pulling something out of the bag in qualifying!

There are huge classes for 1100cc, 1600cc & 2000cc single-seaters and great variety among the Sports & Saloon Classes.

It is also great to see Doug Bennett bringing his awesome Sylva Striker all the way up from Tavistock, with its supercharged 600bhp engine and Pilbeam MP58 transmission & suspension, the spectacle of this car and driver combination will be a great sight.

Practice will run all day on Saturday, with the competition runs all day on Sunday. It is always great to see cars on the hallowed slopes of the Teme Valley and this event is sure to be one of the highlights of the year. See ya there!
