Hollier’s Home Run

Up until the late-1990s, the Five Clubs partnership’s traditional hillclimb weekend at Wiscombe Park in Devon was a British Hillclimb Championship round. These days the event is a double-header round of the ASWMC Hillclimb Championship, but is always a very popular weekend in the South West.

The Empire 00 Evo (seen here in testing) claimed it’s debut wins at Wiscombe Park.

 

Despite other big hillcimb events across the South of England, the BHC at Prescott and then final round of Gurston Down’s season, the Five Clubs attracted a very good entry to the parkland hill.

Midsummer Speed Fest at Gurston

As well as events at Doune and Cultra at the weekend, there was also pair of one day club events at the ever popular Gurston Down Hillclimb in Wiltshire.

The crowd pleasing Mannic-Beattie was hustled to FTD on both days by creater Nik Mann.

 

Saturday’s event was a round of the Association of South West Motor Clubs Hillclimb Championship, whereas Sunday featured the BARC South West Centre’s own Gurston Down Hillclimb Championship.

Hillclimb Videos

Whilst we all miss the days when Hayfisher and Brayspeed produced TV-quality films, covering most of the British Hillclimb Championship and other select events, we do have the wonder of youtube with which view hillclimb footage from the previous weekends events.

Wonderful Werrington

This weekend we decided to give the Midland Hillclimb Championship event at Shelsley Walsh a miss and take on the long journey down to the M5 to Launceston in Cornwall for some proper club hillclimbing at Werrington Park hillclimb.

Werrington House overlooks the famous Cattle Grid.

 

Set in the Tamar Valley, just over the county border, this very fast parkland hill is a real challenge for competitors with some very narrow and very high-speed sections to the course. It may not be World Famous, but Werrington Park has a hardy bunch of supporters!

Our pre-season calendar tour of British Hillclimb Championship venues concludes today with one of the classic hills in the championship.

Wiscombe specialist Tony Wiltshire gets crossed up off the start in 2005 (thanks to Steve Wilkinson).

 

Wiscombe Park hillclimb, near Honiton in Devon, is a truly rustic venue with basic but functional facilities, cracking organisation and a seriously challenging course.

Gurston Down – 2014 Events

Next up we look at one of the busiest hills in the country, as we move from Scotland down to the Westcountry.

Tim Barrington hustles the amazing little Vision-BDA through Karousel in 1992 (thanks to Steve Wilkinson).

 

The farmland venue at Gurston Down, near Salisbury hosts an event every month through the season, as well as the very popular midweek Gurston Down Hillclimb Drivers School events.
