In recent weeks the Midland hillclimb scene has seen the return of one of the most competitive drivers, and one of the most committed hillclimb families, as a very heavily re-developed car has made its first appearance for a few seasons.

Warwickshire 2-litre runner John Chalmers has spent the past couple of years installing a very special new engine into his familiar Ralt F302 chassis, the car with which he took the Shelsley Walsh 2-litre class record in 2011, and after a difficult development period has made a return to the hills.

Cross’ Curborough Cruise!

A couple of weeks ago one of the younger members of the hillclimb family had a baptism of fire as he took a single-seater for a spin for the first time.

Young Ben Cross might still be at school, but thanks to a very enthusiastic Father and some very generous family friends, he got to enjoy a very cool day at Curborough Sprint Track during a midweek test session.

HSA Champion Crowned

The HSA Speed Championship is always one of the most popular series. With a varied points structure, cracking events, good media support and a relaxed & fun atmosphere it is easy to see why.

Alan Mugglestone took the HSA title for 2013 (thanks to Terry Davies).

 

Three of the past four Champions in this series have come from the Mazda MX5 one-make class (the interloper being SBD Westfield driver Matt Hillam in 2012), but that was scheduled to change in 2013. With Hillam moving on to the British Sprint Championship, the way was clear for a new champ.

Rowan Returns

One of the legends of British Hillclimbing will return to the cockpit of a competition car at a speed event this weekend.

After challenging at the top end of the sport for a couple of years, in 1989 Walsall-based engineer Ray Rowan secured the British Hillclimb Championship with his self-built, 4-cylinder Hart powered Roman IV.
