Film Night 16

It’s Saturday night, and it’s time for another Film Night!

Next weekend sees the 90th anniversary Le Mans 24 Hour Race in France and should feature a cracking scrap between the factory teams of Audi Sport and Toyota Motorsport. 20 Years ago this weekend though, all British eyes at Le Mans were focussed on the return to competition of one of the most evocative names in Le Mans history. Jaguar.

Andy Priaulx ROCs

Guernseyman Andy Priaulx had a mixed weekend at the annual Race Of Champions event, held in Dusseldorf, Germany this year.

This event features a huge array of the very best drivers in World motorsport and Priaulx qualifies due to his multiple World Touring Car Championship victories.

The Race Of Champions is a two-day event with a Nations Cup on the Saturday (for teams of drivers) and the ROC on Sunday where individuals compete to see who is Champion of Champions. The event is run on a twist indoor track with drivers using an array of cars including Audi R8s, Skodia S2000 cars, VW Sciroccos and purpose built buggies.

Paired with Jenson Button (Team Guernsey!?) in Team Great Britain for the Nations Cup, Priaulx beat former winner Filipe Alburquerque and F1 champ Sebastian Vettel before being knocked out by Team Germany in the Semi-Final.

For the ROC individual event the 1995 BHC winner beat David Coulthard, Travis Pastrana and Alberquerque again but couldn’t get past eventual winner Sebastien Ogier in the Quarters.

The Motors TV commentatary team regularly remarked that Andy’s stunning starts and tidy turns were honed on the hills!

Don’t forget – Hillclimbing on BBC this Weekend

David Coulthard’s report on hillclimbing will be shown during the Qualifying sessions for this weekend’s Valencia Grand Prix – so if you’re heading to a hillclimb best set the video!

Coulthard at Shelsley

As a precurser to the National Motorsport Week/Go Motorsport profile on BBC TV this weekend, todays Autosport magazine contains a small feature on David Coulthard’s visit to Shelsley Walsh last month.

The images from Shelsley that are included in the article are from Rich Danby ( and one of them seems to feature DC posing with Lee Evans!

During last weekends coverage of the rain-delayed Canadian GP, whilst trying to fill nearly 2hrs of non-action, Martin Brundle and David Coulthard spent somewhile discussing the rubber ‘over-shoes’ that Sebastian Vettel slipped over his race boots to get out of the car.

These boots will be familiar to anyone who has ever attended events at either Wiscombe or Doune! However, at Gurston Down yesterday we discovered that F1 technology is significantly inferior to hillclimb technology. Gould GR37 driver Terry Graves revealed the fanciest pair of overshoes seen yet, as modelled by Hannah below!

Should Red Bull be informed?

David Coulthard’s Shelsley Hillclimb Experience on BBC F1

You may have already heard the news, or David Coulthard mentioning Hillclimbing during the Monaco Grand Prix commentary, but just in case you haven’t we thought we should add a post about Coulthard’s visit to Shelsley Walsh.

On 18th May David Coulthard spent the afternoon at Shelsley Walsh learning all about hillclimbing, sporting trials and autotesting. He’d spent the morning at Brooklands, and the 2 parts are to be shown during the BBC’s coverage of Qualifying for the Valencia Grand Prix (on Saturday 25th June 2011).

You can see all the pictures of the day on Zipp’s David Coulthard at Shelsley Walsh page.

During the day he spoke with many involved in the sport, including:

  • Scott Moran – who’s currently leading the 2011 British Hillclimb Championship
  • Toby Moody – Eurosport presenter, and Shelsley stalwart
  • Alistair Moffat

He saw a range of cars go up the hill, and got to have a little go himself – but only in a road car.

So don’t forget to set the video for Qually at Valencia!
