Podium for Priaulx

After the disappointment of qualifying on Thursday evening, the BMW Motorsport BMW M3 GT of Andy Priaulx, Joey Hand and Dirk Muller recovered to finished 3rd in the GTE-Pro class of the Le Mans 24 race in France today.

The 1995 British Hillclimb Champion drove some cracking stints to overcome challenges from 3x Porsche 911 RSRs to claim the final spot in the podium at what was probably the most competitive Le Mans race ever.

The GTE-Pro class was expected to be an absolute classic but unfortunately the mice got at the machinery in a few cases and 1x Aston Martin Vantage, 1x Lotus Evora, 1x Porsche 911 RSR, 1x BMW M3 GT, 1x Chevy Corvette and 4x Ferrari F458s all fell by the wayside.

This attrition, plus the stunning fight at the front of the prototype field, somewhat overshadowed the catagory which has provided the best racing anywhere in the world over the past 3 years.

Very well done to Andy and his team-mates for this great result in the Worlds Greatest Motor Race.

Priaulx’s Le Mans Nightmare

Works BMW GTE-Pro driver and former British Hillclimb Champion Andy Priaulx’s successful Wednesday qualifying turned into a disaster during the 2nd Free Practice session for the Le Mans 24 Hour Race.

The Robertson Racing Ford GT had a spin in the Ford Chicane which ends the lap at Le Mans and dragged gravel onto the circuit. Priaulx was the first car on the scene and arrived to find the circuit covered in muck & gravel and (more importantly) no yellow flags. Andy locked up on the slippery surface and the car shot off of the circuit and charged into the barriers, which caused extensive damage to the front of the BMW M3 GT. So much damage in fact that the car was unable to be prepared for last night’s final qualifying session.

Fortunately Priaulx’s stunning provisional pole time from Wednesday qually kept the team in the hunt and he, along with co-drivers Dirk Muller and Joey Hand, will start from 3rd place on the GTE-Pro grid.

Priaulx’s Provisional Pole

This weekend sees the 79th running of the Le Mans 24 hour race in Central France. Speed Hillclimbing is well represented at the Circuit de la Sarthe with 1995 British Hillclimb Champion Andy Priaulx right at the sharp end of what is probably the most competitive class at the event.

Priaulx, driving his Schnitzer Motorsport BMW M3 GT2 alongside Dirk Muller and Joey Hand, went out early in last nights 1st qualifying session and set the pace with a 3:58.426s lap. Several drivers looked likely to challenge the Guernseymans time but none managed to get there. The closest challengers were the ‘F1′ team of Gianmaria Bruni & Giancarlo Fisichella, sharing their Ferrari F458 with GT specialist Toni Villander.

The GTE Pro class that Priaulx and his team mates run in is likely to be the talk of the race, 1st qualifying has seen the top 8 cars within 1.5s (on an 8 mile track), and these 8 cars are from 4 different manufacturers!
