Empire Customers Get F1 Lesson

Ever since the very beginning of our sport, at the turn of the 19th/20th Century, innovation and development have been a cornerstone of British Speed Hillclimbing as manufacturers have strived to beat their competition by working harder and thinking smarter.

There is one hillclimb manufacturer which is really going places at the moment. Somerset-based Empire Racing Cars are having a major push in 2014, with the launch of both a brand new, state-of-the-art, carbon fibre chassised, motorcycle engined hillclimb challenger as well as a very innovative, supercharged, sports libre class challenger and a modified version of the existing Leaders class winning, spaceframe chassised ‘Double-0′ series.

Tregrehan News

Sunday 12th June saw the first event of the season at Tregrehan Hillclimb. Tregrehan is a great club venue between St. Austell and Par in mid-Cornwall. Tregrehan was a combined event for bikes and cars, although there were a lot more bikes than cars present.

Our spies in the Dutchy tell us that Jimmy Hodges took overall FTD AND 2nd bike FTD with his 450cc and 501cc Hondas with times of 20.51s and 21.10s, whereas Andy Dinner took the main car award in 20.94s with his ex. Tom New/Simon Frost Pilbeam-Vauxhall MP62/82.

Also competing down at Tregrehan was former Escort driver Doug Bennett who was out with his ferociously powerful supercharged Honda Vtec powered Sylvia Striker. Doug kept the rampant horses under control to be fastest Sports Libre car present.

As so often at events South of the Tamar, Cornish Motorsport legend Roy Bray took the win in the unlimited Production Car Class. After running a Subaru Impreza at most events this year, Roy wheeled out his familiar ‘Furniture Dreckly’ Escort Cosworth for the short blast across the park.

It’s great to see Tregrehan back on the hillclimb calender, true club events such as this should be supported as these are the venues that produce future Regional and even National Champions.
