Hillclimb Videos

Whilst we all miss the days when Hayfisher and Brayspeed produced TV-quality films, covering most of the British Hillclimb Championship and other select events, we do have the wonder of youtube with which view hillclimb footage from the previous weekends events.

Unfortunately Tony Bray is no longer filming the BHC.

Whilst scanning about on the tube this week we have found a couple of cracking videos covering some of the events which have been held so far in 2014.

Wonderful Werrington

This weekend we decided to give the Midland Hillclimb Championship event at Shelsley Walsh a miss and take on the long journey down to the M5 to Launceston in Cornwall for some proper club hillclimbing at Werrington Park hillclimb.

Werrington Park

Werrington House overlooks the famous Cattle Grid.

Set in the Tamar Valley, just over the county border, this very fast parkland hill is a real challenge for competitors with some very narrow and very high-speed sections to the course. It may not be World Famous, but Werrington Park has a hardy bunch of supporters!

Legends Return at Werrington

Despite the fantastic competition, and Terry Graves’ stunning Outright Course Record, the big news of the weekend was the return of Pat ‘Motormouth’ Jennings to the hillclimb commentary box. Plymouth Motor Club have persuaded Pat, undoubtedly the voice of Westcountry hillclimbing, out of his self-imposed retirement which has lasted for more than a decade.

Pat was joined in the box for the weekend by long-term commentry box timekeeper, arch hillclimb enthusiast and former Chevron V8 driver Roger Jordan.

I am personally so pleased that Pat is back where he belongs. It was Pat who encouraged me to join him in the commentary box at Finlake Hillclimb some 16 years ago, and gave me an invaluable lesson in broadcasting to a live audience.

Hopefully this return will not just be a one-off, and once again the South West hills will reverberate to the sound of Pat’s ‘between batch’ catch phrase… “What goes up, must come down” !

Pat Jennings has a great website about South West Speed Hillclimbing, in which he shares his memories of being trackside, check out this link.
