Summers Sets Prescott Alight!

The British Hillclimb Championship sprang into life for the 2014 season at Prescott Hillclimb, near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, last weekend with a cracking weekend of competition at the home of the Bugatti Owners Club.

Starting where he had left off at the end of 2013, last season’s star of the show Alex Summers claimed both British Hillclimb Championship Top 12 Run Off wins in his supercharged DJ Firehawk single-seater.

Brighton Speed Trials

Whilst not being a hillclimb event, one of the biggest competitions on the British Speed Event calendar is the very historic Brighton Speed Trials, which run on Maderia Drive along the seafront of the South Coast seaside town.

Rob Stevens took FTD with this Force SR4 sports-racer in 2012. Hopefully this won’t be the last event on Maderia Drive….

 

The once a year event dates back to the 1905 (the same year that competition began at The World Famous Shelsley Walsh) and for many years once the blue riband event in the British Sprint Championship.

Return of a Legend

One of the most competitive, exciting and technologically advanced hillclimb cars ever seen will return to competition this weekend following a long period of re-development and fettling.

The Manic-Beattie was developed over a ten-year period by former Morris Minor V8 pilot Nik Mann and since its first appearance back in 2001 it has reset the Outright Sports Car records at both Gurston Down and at The World Famous Shelsley Walsh.

Stevens’ Stunner!

One of the oldest National Hillclimb records in the book was erased last weekend at Prescott’s Midland Hillclimb Championship round.

Driving the supercharged mega-horsepowered ‘purple-peril’ Force SR4, Rob Stevens has been going faster and faster in recent seasons. Having stepped up to the Unlimited Capacity Sports Libre class for 2013, one of the tasks he has faced has been to re-write Martin Bolsover’s quite incredible Prescott class record from 1984.

Mannic Morris!

The recent Midland Hillclimb Championship event at Shelsley Walsh celebrated the 100th anniversary of Morris Cars. As part of this celebration, a large number of Morris cars were exercised on the hallowed 1000 yards in demonstration runs.

A couple of familiar hillclimbing faces popped up in these demo runs. Father of Zipp Photography’s Rich Danby, and Will Hall’s gofor, Paul Danby brought his own Morris called Ethel to his local hill, but most of the crowd’s attention was diverted to what must be the fastest Morris ever to climb The World Famous hillclimb.

Shelsley Starts!

For the first time in 2013 the Teme Valley in Worcestershire reverberated to the sound of highly tuned racing engines at the weekend as the Midland Hillclimb Championship made its first of three visits to Shelsley Walsh.

The hallowed tarmac of The World Famous venue was in fantastic condition following a whole host of winter improvements and records tumbled as a result. Both the resurfacing to The Esses section and the improved banking on the inside of Crossing Bend seemed to be universally popular amongst the drivers.
