There was lots of paddock chatter over the past couple of weekends at the British & Midland Championship weekends at Shelsley Walsh and Loton Park about the forthcoming sale of one of the fastest 1600c Racing Cars around.

Another Reworked Pilbeam

Hot on the heals of Ed Hollier’s 1600cc Hayabusa-powered Pilbeam MP62 which debuted earlier this year, rumour has it that there is a fourth motorcycle-engined Pilbeam single-seater in build in the Westcountry.

Peter Arscott was the first to try a transverse engine in one of Mike Pilbeam’s bespoke hillclimb chassis when he installed a 1300cc Hayabusa into his ex. Rob Turnbull Mp50 chassis for use in Cornish events. Hollier was next with his ex. John Whyte MP62 and will be followed by former Westfield drivers Rob & Peter Ede who are working on a blown ‘busa installation for their ex. works MP82.

Trevor’s Topsy-Turvy Triumph

A quite remarkable pair of British Championship scoring Top 12 Run Offs at Prescott Hillclimb saw Trevor Willis on top form to take one step closer to a possible first British Championship title.

After approaching the mark in final practice on Saturday afternoon, Willis took the outright hill record in the first Run Off to outscore reigning champion Scott Moran, before producing an amazing qualifying effort and a second place finish second time up to reclaim the championship lead with just four rounds of the season to go.

Bike-Engines Clean Up

The pair of clubby events at Loton Park at the weekend produced some results which were somewhat against the formbook.

Most observers would have expected the V6 engined Pilbeam MP88s of Mike Tregoning and George Bleasdale or the TKD V8 OMS of Tim Elmer to lead the way, however things didn’t go according to plan for the big-hitters…

Playing in the Park

The weekend just gone saw an eventful pair of club meetings at the Hagley & District Light Car Club’s challenging Loton Park venue in Shropshire. The weather wasn’t at its best so times were a little below what we would expect, there were several incidents (not all of them on the track) but the events were enjoyed by most.
