Wonderful Wiscombe

As there were no British Championship rounds on last weekend, and as we were in the area anyway, we decided to pop in to Wiscombe Park for Woolbridge Motor Club’s first hillclimb of the year on Saturday. The weather was good, as was the condition of the hill, and the competition was very close in several classes.

Former Hillclimb Leaders Champion Mike Lee continued his amazingly succesful 2011 season with the ex. Sexton/Moseley OMS 2000M with his 2nd FTD of the year backing up his success at Werrington last month. Lee was in the 37 second bracket all day as he saw off the F1 V8 challenge of Andrew Forsyth and Rodney Thorne (Pilbeam MP58s).

As so often as Wiscombe club events though the Modified Saloon Classes produced some of the best action of the day. Truck driver Vince Stone produced a beautifully smooth run with his offensively green Mini to take the 1400cc class from local experts Bob Rouse & Adrian Langley.

After a two year lay off Martyn Pike proved that he certainly hasn’t forgotten his way up the East Devon hill as he took the 1800cc class in his Escort, some three seconds ahead of a ding-dong battle between Andy Stoddart and Gordon Iles’ battling Vauxhalls.

The Unlimited Saloon Class saw the usual Wiscombe win for Den Conibear’s uber-powerful GTiR Pulsar, but this time he was pushed really hard for the win. Peter Turnbull has really been getting to grips with his ex. Porsche Cup 911 GT3 this season and he closed to within a 1/4 second of Conibear 1st time up, only to make a small mistake on his 2nd run.

Other notable performances on the day came from Dave Gardner who pushed his 1100cc Empire into the 38s, Anthony Bulpitt who saw off the hi-tech Japanese challenge to win class A4 in his Sierra Saphire and Andy Webber who set a stunning 46sec run in his +2 Elan.
